CD Review: David Daughtry Steps Into The Spotlight As A Solo Artist: Releases Self-Titled Project

Gifted singer David Daughtry steps into the spotlight as a solo Gospel artist with the release of his self-titled project, DAVID DAUGHTRY (Karew Records/Whitethrone Productions).

Avid Gospel music fans are in for a treat with the release of this highly anticipated project. Coming off the success of his hit single, “God is Great (Leap!),” Daughtry is seeking to bridge the gap between the old and the new sounds of Gospel music.

The album captures some great moments where Daughtry shows his versatility for composing great music, by creating singable songs for choirs, praise teams and soloists.

The project incorporates a modern blend of love ballads, high-energy praise and worship songs, and traditional and contemporary gospel songs. The music compositions – a diverse mixture of soft, mellow and upbeat arrangements – are well thought out and mesh perfectly together with each song.

The highlights of the album are “God Is Great (Leap!),” “My Weapon,” “How Can You Live Without Christ,” and “You Are.”

“God is Great (Leap!),” is a song of praise and adoration. Daughtry stays true to the culture of old time Gospel music with this foot stomping, hand clapping declaration, which says, “When I think about what God has done for me”… it makes me leap for joy. And this song will do just that, make you want to leap.

Winans fans will love the remake of the classic ballad “How Can You Live Without Christ,” which features background vocals by actor/singer Chaz Shepherd (Set It Off, 7th Heaven, Dreamgirls). Daughtry does an excellent job delivering this updated rendition of the legendary group’s song.

“You Are,” is an extraordinary song you should be ready to put on repeat. It is a beautifully arranged contemporary worship song written by musician/producer Jason White, and shows Daughtry’s incredible vocal range and mastery of the falsetto voice.

Other songs that listeners will enjoy are: “When God Says No,” “He Is Able,” “Be Healed” and “Great and Mighty.”

“When God Says No” is an organ and vocal solo written by award-winning Gospel artist Kurt Carr. “He Is Able” is an up-tempo praise song featuring Gospel vocalist Keisha Renee). “Be Healed,” is a churchy tune that declares, “Praise is a weapon”, and affirms that there is nothing too hard for God. “Great and Mighty” is a high-energy song of celebration and praise, and pays homage to God’s glory and majesty.

Daughtry has been a part of the Gospel music industry for years, while serving his tenure as Director of Praise & Worship at West Angeles COGIC (Bishop Charles E. Blake) and lending his vocals to some of the world’s most renowned singers (Kim Burrell, Yolanda Adams, and many others). The release of his self-titled project brings limitless possibilities for his music ministry, and he is excited about the opportunity to reach a worldwide audience, and spread the message of the Gospel through music.
